Problems with Nested Subtotals

Summary: One day your subtotals work great; the next they are in the wrong order. This is not that far-fetched, and if it happens to you then you’ll need the information provided in this tip (This tip works with Microsoft Excel 2002, and Excel 2003.)

Kathy uses Excel 2002, and until recently was able to create nested subtotals with no problem. When she had her Office system updated using Service Pack 3, the subtotals all of a sudden didn't organize themselves properly. Instead of the grand total being after the subtotal lines, all the subtotal lines appeared after the grand total.

This problem seems to be a known issue to the folks at Microsoft, and it affects both Excel 2002 and Excel 2003. It is unclear whether the problem was introduced with SP3, or whether Microsoft simply became aware of it after SP3 was released. In either case, the problem and solution are discussed in this Knowledge Base article:

In short, you can fix the problem in Excel 2002 by downloading a hotfix, and in Excel 2003 by installing SP1. You may also be able to fix the problem by editing the Windows Registry, as described in the Knowledge Base article.

Tip #3080 applies to Microsoft Excel versions: 2002 | 2003
