Positioning Line Numbers

Summary: Line numbers can be added to a document, and is typically done in legal documents. The line numbers appear to the left of each line on a page, and Word allows you to control the distance between those line numbers and the text of the document. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003.)

In other issues of WordTips you learned how to add line numbers to your document. Word also allows you to modify how far line numbers are from the text in your document. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Page Setup option from the File menu. Word displays the Page Setup dialog box.
  2. Make sure the Layout tab is selected. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  3. Click on the Line Numbers button. You will see the Line Numbers dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  4. Adjust the measurement in the From Text box to indicate how far the line numbers appear from your text.
  5. Click on OK to close the Line Numbers dialog box.
  6. Click on OK to close the Page Setup dialog box.

Tip #1266 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003
